St Mary’s DSG Turns 146

- Rev Alison Thabethe

On Monday, the feast of the Nativity of Mary, we gathered as a school family to celebrate St Mary’s DSG’s 146th birthday. The occasion was marked not only with a beautiful cake, candles, and the singing of Happy Birthday, but most importantly with worship and thanksgiving at the Eucharist. The preacher and celebrant was the Vicar General, the Rt Revd Moses Thabethe, who reminded us of what we can learn from Mary.

He spoke of Mary’s humility: though she did not see herself as important, God chose her. This reminds us that each one of us, no matter how small or unnoticed we may feel, is known by name and gifted to make a difference. He also spoke of Mary’s joy: even in uncertain times, she chose to sing. Joy, he said, is deeper than happiness. It is a choice rooted in trust. Finally, he reflected on how Mary brought Christ to others. We too can bring light whenever we act with kindness, inclusion, honesty, and courage.

As the Vicar General concluded, both Mary’s life and our school’s history show how something small and humble can grow into something extraordinary when God is at work. May St Mary’s DSG continue to form young women who walk humbly with God, live with joy even in uncertain times, and bring the light of Christ into the world.

Happy birthday, Mary. And happy birthday, St Mary’s DSG.
