Exploring Faith, History and Heritage at St Alban's Cathedral
Our Grade 5s recently enjoyed a wonderful morning at St. Alban's Cathedral in Pretoria as part of the Grade 5 Divinity syllabus.
Over the past few weeks, they have been learning about places of worship, beginning with the Tabernacle in the Old Testament, exploring the symbolism within our own St Mary's Chapel, and then seeing those same traditions and symbols come to life in the Cathedral, which is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Pretoria.
As they explored the beautiful building, the girls discovered the meaning behind many of the cathedral's features, from the nave and chancel to the stained glass windows, altar, font and Tabernacle/Aumbry. They also uncovered fascinating connections between St. Alban's Cathedral and St Mary's DSG, learning about significant Anglican leaders such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Bishop Henry Bousfield, the first Bishop of Pretoria, and discovering the historic links between the Cathedral and St Mary's DSG.
More than just a history lesson, the visit brought their classroom learning to life, allowing them to experience the richness of Anglican worship, tradition and heritage in a truly memorable way.
A heartfelt thank you to the Dean, verger and staff of St Alban's Cathedral for their warm hospitality and for allowing us the privilege of exploring the Cathedral in such a meaningful and close up way. It was a morning our Grade 5s will remember for many years to come.
