Sacramental Milestones

This term, the school community celebrated two significant moments in the sacramental life of St Mary's DSG as students prepared for Baptism, Admission to Holy Communion and Confirmation. While our chapel services welcome students, staff and families from many Christian traditions, these sacramental milestones remain an important expression of the school's Anglican identity and our shared life of worship.

Recently the Grade 10 and 11 Confirmation class spent a Quiet Day at the Padre Pio Centre. In the beauty and stillness of the retreat setting, students had time to step away from the pace of school life, to pray, reflect and ask honest questions about faith. The day concluded with Evening Prayer and the celebration of Baptisms, a reminder that, in the Anglican tradition, Baptism marks our welcome into the life of Christ and the fellowship of his people.

On Monday 20 July, the Junior School community gathered during chapel to celebrate the Baptism of members of the Grade 5 Admission to Holy Communion class. Family and friends joined us for this joyful occasion as Revd Grant Trewern, Chaplain of St Alban's College, baptised the students.

In his homily, Revd Grant reflected on the school blazer as an outward sign of belonging to St Mary's DSG. Just as the blazer points to a deeper identity than the uniform itself, so the visible signs of Baptism point beyond the water to God's grace at work in our lives. Baptism is more than a meaningful ceremony. It is a sign of God's welcome, love and promise, inviting us into the life of Christ and into the community of the Church.

As an Anglican school, we value the sacraments because they help us encounter God in the ordinary. They remind us that God's grace is not separate from everyday life, but present within it. They invite us to pause, to pay attention and to discover that ordinary moments can become holy when they are offered to God. Water, bread and wine become visible reminders of God's invisible grace, drawing us back to his presence and his promises. Like many of the rhythms and rituals that shape school life, they become part of the pattern of faith that forms and sustains us.

This sacramental life continues throughout the year. The Eucharist is celebrated every Thursday at 7:00 am in the Lady Chapel, and all members of the school community are warmly welcome to attend.

Christians understand the sacraments in different ways, and we honour that diversity within our school community. We are grateful to offer preparation for Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation to those students and families who wish to receive these sacraments. As part of the Anglican ethos of St Mary's DSG, our hope is that this preparation will help students and families deepen their faith and become connected with the worship and mission of their local church.
