Grade 6 Design Challenge

- Mrs Louise Whitelaw

On the 9 July, our Grade 6s took part in the much-anticipated annual Design Challenge, held in collaboration with our brother school, WHPS (Waterkloof House Preparatory School). This exciting event brings girls and boys together in mixed teams to tackle a surprise engineering task, all with just a handful of materials and a whole lot of imagination!

This year’s challenge was to design and build a structure strong enough to withstand an earthquake and protect an egg inside it. After watching a few short clips to spark ideas, the teams had 50 minutes to plan, design, and construct their buildings using only the items provided.

There was a buzz of energy as the timer counted down, with teams testing ideas, adapting designs, and supporting each other. The real excitement came when it was time to shake the buildings, and even more so when the eggs inside emerged uncracked!

Beyond the fun and laughter, the Design Challenge is an evening of creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and teamwork. Most importantly, it strengthens the connections between our two schools as our boys and girls share ideas, support one other, and celebrate success together.
