Love in Action – Our February Story

- Mrs Odelle Howard

February invites us to reflect on love, not the fleeting kind marked only by a date on the calendar, but the steady, intentional love that builds community, shapes character, and anchors purpose. As I look back on the past few weeks across both our Junior and Senior Schools, I am deeply aware that love has been evident everywhere, in relationships formed, in excellence pursued, in service offered, and in faith lived out.

We began the month gathered together at our Parent Association AGM. Love for our school was unmistakable. Parents raised their hands to volunteer. Ideas were shared generously. Conversations were solution-focused and forward-looking. That willingness to contribute time and thought is an act of love. It signals belief in what we are building together and a desire to see it flourish for every girl who walks through our gates.

The PA Cocktail Evening was a beautiful and classy affair — warm, generous in spirit, and thoughtfully arranged. My sincere thanks to our PA and staff who gave so willingly of their time and creativity to make the evening what it was. It was more than a social gathering; it was a reminder that strong schools are built on strong relationships. When parents and staff sit together, share conversation, and connect beyond logistics and calendars, something powerful happens. Trust deepens. Partnership strengthens. Community grows.

That same spirit carried into our Junior and Senior School galas, followed by family picnics that transformed competitive energy into shared celebration. Watching families spread out across the grounds with siblings playing, parents connecting, girls laughing with teammates, one could see what makes our school distinctive. We compete with heart, and we gather with joy. These moments matter. They remind our girls that belonging and support sit alongside ambition and achievement.

Speaking of achievement, congratulations to our Senior Swimming Team for securing second place in the B-League gala. This was no small accomplishment. It reflects early mornings, disciplined training, teamwork, and resilience. Excellence does not happen by accident; it is cultivated. I am proud not only of the result, but of the character shown along the way.

Valentine’s Day itself was spent in a way that felt entirely fitting through hosting our Open Day. There was something beautifully symbolic about opening our doors on a day associated with love. Staff, students, and parents stood side by side, proudly showcasing our classrooms, our co-curricular spaces, and most importantly, our ethos. The authenticity of our girls, the professionalism of our staff, and the warmth of our parent body spoke louder than any brochure ever could. It was a Valentine’s gesture in its truest form, a confident declaration of who we are.

Partnerships also formed part of this month’s story. We were privileged to be one of only twelve schools selected, alongside Hilton College, to host a session with Investec Invest-Ed. The conversations around the future world of work were rich and thought-provoking. Our girls engaged with confidence and curiosity, representing our school with pride. One parent shared afterwards that the session was so compelling that it caused them to reconsider their own career path. When learning sparks possibility not only in our students but in the adults around them, we know we are engaging with something meaningful.

Connection across generations was beautifully evident at our Grade 12 and Grade 8 Mother–Daughter Lunch. There is something profoundly moving about seeing our youngest Senior School girls sitting alongside those preparing to leave, all gathered with the women who have journeyed beside them. The speeches by our task leader moms, reflecting on their time at the school and offering encouragement to the girls, were sincere and inspiring. In those moments, one sees the thread of legacy so clearly. The values instilled here endure. The bonds formed here last.

Our responsibility to the future extends beyond our relationships with one another; it includes our care for the world entrusted to us. This month, we continued to embed our commitment to sustainability through our water harvesting, recycling, and solar initiatives. These are not simply projects, but they are statements of intent. We are modelling for our girls what it means to live responsibly and to lead thoughtfully.

I had the pleasure recently of being interviewed by Anesu Manyuchi about these sustainability efforts. Her confidence, her curiosity, and the depth of her questioning filled me with pride. To engage with a young woman so assured and so invested in meaningful issues is a reminder of why we do this work. Our girls are not passive recipients of education; they are active participants in shaping the future.

We also gathered to celebrate the installation of Mrs Jomari Miller, in a service presided over by Bishop Kgabe. It was a sacred and joyful occasion. When our girls sang “Welcome to the Family,” they did so with warmth and conviction, and in that moment, one felt the strength of our Christian foundation. The blessing of our Board members during the service reminded us that leadership and governance are acts of stewardship. We are grateful for the guidance and wisdom that sustain our school.

As we now turn toward the season of Lent, our reflections on love deepen. Lent calls us to fast, to pray, and to give. At first glance, these practices may seem like a sacrifice, and indeed they are. But at their heart, they are acts of love.

Fasting teaches us discipline and empathy. Prayer draws us into a closer relationship with God. Giving, whether through charity, service, or quiet acts of kindness, shifts our focus outward toward others.

Our upcoming knitting drive, where blankets will be made and donated, is a tangible expression of this love. Each stitch represents care. Each blanket carries warmth and dignity to someone in need. In a world that can often feel hurried and self-focused, such intentional acts matter deeply.

If February has reminded us of anything, it is this: love is not a single event or celebration. It is found in partnership, in excellence, in stewardship, in faith, and in service. It is present when parents volunteer, when girls compete with courage, when staff give generously of themselves, and when we pause to consider how our actions impact future generations.

May we continue to choose love, not as sentiment, but as action. May we lead with it, teach through it, and model it daily for the remarkable young women entrusted to our care.
