Grade 7 Girls Take on Cape Town!
What do you get when you mix a group of enthusiastic Grade 7 girls with one of South Africa's most beautiful cities? An unforgettable adventure filled with amazing sights, incredible stories, and a whole lot of fun! Our recent trip to Cape Town was definitely one for the books.
After an exciting flight, we were off to a flying start on Day 1 with a trip up Table Mountain. The cable car ride was a thrill, and the views from the top were simply breathtaking. After a quick tour of the mountain and some very interesting “Did you know?” answers, we settled into our accommodation at Rocklands Centre - the perfect home base for a week of exploration.
On Day 2, we became true adventurers, climbing countless stairs to reach the lighthouse at Cape Point for a spectacular view. We then made a quick stop for a photo at the Cape of Good Hope before heading to Boulders Beach to visit the endangered African penguins. The girls were pleasantly surprised by our next stop: the Naval Museum. They learned about Morse code, climbed into a submarine, and even tried their hand at tying sea knots and pressing all the buttons on a ship’s control console for the gun firing system! The day ended perfectly with some beach soccer and a delicious "twirly whirly" ice cream cones in Fish Hoek.
Day 3 was a day of powerful history. We took a boat to Robben Island for a poignant tour led by an ex-inmate, who shared his personal story and showed us the very cell where Nelson Mandela was held. Later, we visited the Christiaan Barnard Heart Museum at Groote Schuur Hospital, where the world's first heart transplant took place. The girls were fascinated by the wax figures recreating the scene and loved hearing all the "juicy details" of that incredible day.
Our last stop on Day 4 was the Two Oceans Aquarium before heading back home. The girls were given the opportunity to touch and interact with starfish, sea urchins and anemones while learning about the very diverse eco systems in our oceans.
From the stunning views of Table Mountain to the rich history of Robben Island and the thrill of the Naval Museum, our Cape Town trip was a whirlwind of new experiences. We returned with full hearts, wonderful memories, and more than a few funny stories! Our sincerest gratitude goes to the amazing team at Rocklands Centre for keeping us well fed and looked after. An even bigger thank you to the dedicated teachers who guided and cared for the girls, and to the generous parents whose support made this incredible journey possible.
