Gr9 Drama students visited the Joburg Theatre to watch ‘A Howl in Makhanda’

- Mrs Ronelle Markgraaff

The Grade 9 Drama students had the valuable opportunity to attend a live theatre performance at the Joburg Theatre on Thursday, 5 March 2026, where they watched A Howl in Makhanda during the academic day. For many girls, this marked their first experience of a professional theatre environment, making the outing both exciting and impactful. The students responded with enthusiasm and genuine appreciation for the performance, engaging thoughtfully with the themes, staging, and overall theatricality of the production during the Q&A and afterwards in class.

Following the excursion, students completed their Cycle Test on the duties and responsibilities of the various crew members involved in a theatre production. It was particularly encouraging to observe the depth of understanding and insight demonstrated in their responses. The live experience clearly enhanced their comprehension, allowing them to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application in a meaningful way.

Overall, this outing proved to be a memorable and enriching experience for the students. It not only broadened their exposure to the performing arts but also strengthened their academic engagement within the subject. It is certainly an initiative worth continuing in the future to further inspire and educate our Drama learners.
