Debating Success for St Mary’s DSG at the Atheneum Northern League

On Saturday 10 May, St Mary’s DSG participated in the Atheneum Northern League, a prestigious debating competition featuring schools from across Centurion and Pretoria. Participating schools included, among others, Pretoria Girls High School, Cornwall Hill College, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), and Lyttelton Manor High School.

Despite joining the league during its final preliminary rounds, both St Mary’s DSG teams delivered exceptional performances.

St Mary’s DSG Team 1 – comprising Nolwazi Sibanyoni, Orchella Djoko-Kuissu, Siphesihle Nkosi, Mwayi Phiri, Mokgethoa Langa, and Masego Moagi – won two out of their three debates. Their impressive showing secured them a place in the top 8, ranking 5th overall on speaker points, and earned them a spot in the upcoming quarter-finals.

St Mary’s DSG Team 2, made up of Paula-Jean Phiri, Claire Mazengura, Moratwa Mmakau, and Ronewa Ramabulana, mirrored their peers' success by also winning two of their three rounds. They ranked 7th on the final tab and likewise progressed to the quarter-finals.

We are proud to announce that both teams will compete in the quarter-final round on 24 May at Pretoria Girls High School, vying for the title of Champions of the North.

We wish our debaters all the best as they continue to represent St Mary’s DSG with excellence and determination.
