Youth Month Outreach Day: Giving Without Boundaries
On Thursday, 18 June, the Senior and Junior School of St Mary’s DSG came together in celebration of Youth Month for a day dedicated to service, compassion, and meaningful community engagement. Through the Whole School Outreach Day initiative, students and staff united with a shared purpose: to make a positive difference in the lives of others while embracing the values of generosity, empathy, and active citizenship.
The outreach initiative focused on supporting two valued beneficiaries, Padisago Primary School in Soshanguve and Irene Homes. Thanks to the remarkable generosity of our school community, a wide range of essential items was collected and donated, including food supplies, toiletries, and classroom resources. These contributions will help meet practical needs while also reinforcing the importance of caring for those around us.
Throughout the day, students participated in a variety of purposeful and hands-on activities designed to both serve others and develop valuable life skills. Students worked together to prepare soup packs, carefully measuring ingredients and packaging them for distribution. This activity not only contributed to a worthy cause but also provided an opportunity to practise teamwork, responsibility, and attention to detail.
In addition, students created a range of educational resources that will support teaching and learning at Padisago Primary School. These included handmade teaching aids such as clocks, which will assist young students in developing important numeracy and time-telling skills. Creativity and care were evident in every resource produced. Students also made play dough and hand lotion, combining practical skills with thoughtful service to create items that would bring both enjoyment and benefit to recipients.
One of the highlights of the day was the visit to Irene Homes by our Grade 10 and Grade 7 students. This special experience allowed them to spend meaningful time with the residents, building connections across generations through conversation, laughter, and shared activities. Students organised interactive games and enjoyed engaging with the residents in a warm and welcoming environment. To conclude the visit, they prepared and served delicious hot dogs, creating an atmosphere of fellowship and joy that was appreciated by all.
Beyond the tangible donations and activities, the Outreach Day provided students with an invaluable opportunity to experience the true spirit of giving. It reminded us that service is not only about providing resources, but also about sharing our time, talents, and compassion. The day encouraged students to reflect on their role within the broader community and to recognise the impact that even small acts of kindness can have on the lives of others.
The success of the initiative was made possible through the collective efforts of many individuals. We extend our sincere gratitude to the parents who generously donated items and supported the outreach activities. Your contributions helped make the day both meaningful and memorable, and your continued partnership enables us to nurture a culture of service within our school community.
The Aganang Outreach Board would also like to express its heartfelt appreciation to every student, staff member, volunteer, and supporter who contributed to the day’s success. Your commitment, enthusiasm, and care transformed this initiative into far more than an event. Because of your involvement, our students not only learned new skills but also experienced first-hand the profound value of giving without expecting anything in return.
As the Sepedi proverb reminds us, “Motho ke motho ka batho” — a person is a person because of other people. This powerful sentiment captures the essence of the day. No one achieves meaningful change alone; it is through collaboration, compassion, and community that we are able to make a lasting difference.
Our Youth Month Outreach Day served as a beautiful reminder that when a community comes together with a shared purpose, remarkable things can happen. The kindness shown, the relationships formed, and the lessons learned will continue to resonate long after the day itself has ended. We are proud of our students for embracing the opportunity to serve and grateful to everyone who helped make this celebration of generosity and community spirit such a resounding success.
