TERM 1 Sports Report

- Mrs Hanlie Podd

Sport at our school continues to thrive, with students embracing opportunities across a wide range of disciplines. This term has been defined by growth, resilience, and spirited competition. From the pool to the courts, and from the fields to the arenas, our athletes have demonstrated both skill and determination, laying a strong foundation for future success.

Swimming

Swimming in the Senior School has shown remarkable progress, with more athletes reaching NTS level. The partnership with Rebels Swimming Academy has provided invaluable coaching and support, and the swimmers are clearly thriving under this guidance. While the absence of a heated pool remains a challenge, ongoing discussions promise exciting developments. Interhouse Swimming was a highlight of the term, with exceptional participation and school spirit culminating in St George securing the overall win. At Interhigh, the team achieved an impressive second-place finish, a testament to their unity and determination. Endurance swimming was also celebrated, with students completing both the 8-mile and 16-mile Midmar Mile events. Several swimmers will soon compete at Level 2 and Level 3 NTS galas, while one athlete has earned international recognition as part of the Botswana youth team.

Basketball

Basketball has continued to grow in strength and confidence. Participation in the Johannesburg league produced mixed results, but steady improvement was evident throughout. The U16 team gained valuable experience at the St Stithians Festival, while the U18 team competed strongly at the St Peter’s Festival. The Pretoria league began with encouraging results, reflecting the upward trajectory of the programme.

Volleyball

Volleyball remains one of the most popular sports, with large numbers of players participating. Training has focused on maintaining quality and intensity despite the growing player base. The 1st Team deserves special commendation for consistent excellence, and their participation in the Goliath Cup added further competitive experience.

Tennis

The tennis programme enjoyed a busy term, finishing seventh overall at the ISTT Tournament. A notable doubles victory against Roedean followed a tightly contested 3–3 draw, showcasing the team’s resilience. League fixtures are ongoing, with mixed results but clear signs of progress and development.

Hockey

Hockey has seen encouraging growth, with many first-time players gaining valuable exposure. Indoor friendlies against Hatfield Christian School provided competitive opportunities, while additional fixtures included friendlies and derby days against Afrikaans Hoër Meisies, Hoërskool Brits, Rustenburg, Waterkloof, and Brescia House. Teams also participated in major festivals, including Roedean (U14), St Andrews (U15/U16), and Kingsmead (U18). The U14 team achieved a commendable 10th place out of 32 teams. These fixtures form part of a broader development strategy, building experience and match temperament ahead of the league in Term 2.

Squash

Squash players gained valuable competitive exposure this term. Mini festivals against Hoërskool Menlopark and Pretoria High School for Girls provided strong competition, while a derby day against Potchefstroom Girls High added further experience. Players also participated in Nationals in Cape Town and will compete in the SA Junior Open Tournament, ensuring continued growth in the sport.

Netball

Netball teams prepared strongly for the upcoming league season. A preseason friendly against Maragon set the tone, followed by derby days against Rustenburg and Brescia. Teams also participated in major festivals, including Roedean (U14), St Mary’s Waverley (U15), St Andrews (U16), Brescia (U17), and Kingsmead (U18). These fixtures have provided invaluable preparation and will ensure readiness for the league ahead.
