As we come to the end of what has been a very busy, yet incredibly fulfilling term, we look forward with anticipation to the upcoming Easter holiday, a time for rest, renewal, and a well-deserved break for our entire school community.

This term has been characterised by energy, commitment, and remarkable balance. Our students have navigated the demands of academic learning and assessment alongside Major Production rehearsals, sports fixtures, festivals, and cultural events. They have truly embodied resilience, juggling textbooks, drama scripts, and sporting commitments with determination and grace. Most importantly, they showed up, they persevered, and they gave of their best.

This past weekend, as I travelled from festival to festival, I was filled with immense pride. I witnessed ea. the beautiful tactical play of our U16 netball team at St Andrew’s, the outstanding defensive efforts of our U14 hockey team competing against strong opposition at Roedean, and the passion and heart displayed by our U17 teams at St Peter’s. Across all sporting codes, our girls have worked tirelessly in preparation for their upcoming league matches, demonstrating both discipline and team spirit.

In the cultural sphere, the Arts have flourished. Our Major Production, The Bloom, is the result of countless hours of dedication and creativity. We eagerly anticipate the dress rehearsal on Monday, where we will have the privilege of hosting members of Irene Homes. The official performance on Tuesday and the Gala Evening on Wednesday promise to be exceptional, and we look forward to the support of our parent community at these special events.

Our Drama students have also excelled, earning two gold awards at Fizzfest against strong competition, while our Grade 10 students have made us proud by winning their category at the Van Huyssteens Oratorical Festival. These achievements are a testament to their talent, discipline, and commitment.

As reports are issued at the end of term, I trust they will reflect what we have seen so clearly: our students do nothing half-heartedly.

In assembly this week, I shared with the girls the powerful symbolism of the bee. A single bee can visit up to 5,000 flowers in one day, and from this extraordinary effort comes something truly remarkable, honey. Sweet, golden, and nourishing. This honey is the reward of consistent, purposeful work.

This term has been our students’ beehive. In every lesson, practice, rehearsal, and competition, they have been gathering nectar, developing skills, building confidence, strengthening friendships, and growing in character. Even when unnoticed, every small effort has contributed to something meaningful and lasting.

Yet this term has also shown us that the beehive extends far beyond our classrooms and fields. At the start of the year, I challenged our parent body to become even more actively involved in the life of the school, and what a remarkable response we have seen. It has been a privilege to engage in meaningful conversations with so many of you about the shared goal of raising not only successful students, but grounded, capable young adults. Seeing an increased number of parents proudly wearing their supporter shirts along the sports fields, cheering with enthusiasm and encouragement, has added a richness to our school experience that cannot be overstated. Your presence, your partnership, and your investment form part of the honey we are creating together, strengthening the fabric of our community and enriching the journey of every girl.

In the same spirit, we extend our sincere gratitude to our Alumnae who returned to share their valuable insights during assembly. By speaking into the lives of our current students, they allowed our girls to see the tangible result of the “honey” they themselves began collecting during their time at St Mary’s DSG. Their stories served as powerful reminders that the effort, resilience, and values nurtured here continue to bear fruit long after their school years have ended.

Just as bees understand the importance of rhythm and rest, so too must we. Balance is essential. It is not only about gathering nectar, but also about appreciating the blooms along the way, the moments of joy, laughter, creativity, and connection that make the journey worthwhile.

Each student’s “honey” will look different. For some, it may be success on the sports field, for others, a breakthrough in the classroom, a beautiful performance, or the simple joy of shared moments with friends. What matters is that through their efforts, they are creating something deeply valuable, something that cannot be taken away: growth, resilience, confidence, and pride.

Every small step taken this term matters. Every challenge faced, every extra effort made, these are the building blocks of something remarkable.

As we break for the holidays, I encourage our girls to rest well, to recharge, and to return ready to embrace new opportunities with the same passion and purpose. The foundation has been laid, and indeed, the best is yet to come.

Wishing all our families a blessed and joyful Easter.
