Breaking Barriers: Girls in the 2025 South African Mathematics Olympiad

Breaking Barriers: Girls in the 2025 South African Mathematics Olympiad

Mathematics educators across South Africa are always seeking opportunities to inspire learners, particularly young girls, to embrace the beauty and power of mathematics. The South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO), held on March 13, 2025, provided such an opportunity—a platform where learners from diverse backgrounds, demonstrated their mathematical skills.

For years, mathematics has been perceived as a male-dominated field, but this perception is changing. Many talented young girls hesitate to participate in mathematical challenges due to a lack of confidence or representation. However, initiatives aimed at increasing female participation in STEM fields have begun to make a significant impact. The 2025 SAMO is seeing a notable rise in female participants, reflecting the success of these efforts. Encouraging girls to take part in such competitions fosters confidence, enhances problem-solving skills, and opens doors to future opportunities in STEM careers.

The Journey Through the Olympiad

SAMO is designed to challenge learners at various levels, with three progressive rounds that test problem-solving abilities and logical reasoning:

  • First Round (March 13, 2025): All registered learners participated in a set of 20 multiple-choice questions, assessing their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Second Round (May 15, 2025): Learners who achieved at least 50% in the first round advanced to face more complex mathematical challenges.
  • Third Round (July 31, 2025): The top 100 learners from the junior and senior divisions progressed to the final stage, showcasing exceptional mathematical ability.

Mathematics departments across schools have noted the benefits of exposing learners to Olympiad-style problems, which go beyond routine classroom exercises. These problems encourage creativity, analytical thinking, and perseverance—essential skills for any aspiring mathematician.

The Impact Beyond the Competition

Regardless of their performance in the Olympiad, every participant gains invaluable experience. Engaging in mathematical competitions develops resilience and a deeper appreciation for problem-solving, skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Female learners, in particular, benefit from the exposure, as they gain confidence in their mathematical abilities and see themselves as capable competitors in a historically male-dominated field. Discussions about problem-solving strategies and analytical thinking continue beyond the competition day, fostering a culture of mathematical curiosity. With continued support from schools, educators, and organisations like the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF), more young learners will have the confidence to pursue mathematics at an advanced level. Congratulations to all St Mary’s DSG participants of the first round—your dedication and hard work are truly commendable.
