Grade 12s inspired by Othello production at the University of Johannesburg

- Mrs Liz Vincent

Our Grade 12 learners recently had the privilege of attending a compelling production of Othello, hosted by the University of Johannesburg. The experience proved to be both highly engaging and educational, offering students a valuable opportunity to see their prescribed Shakespearean text brought to life on stage.

The actors delivered powerful portrayals of the complex characters, capturing the intense emotions and dramatic tension that define the play. From Othello’s tragic descent into jealousy to Iago’s calculated manipulation, the production effectively conveyed the timeless themes of love, trust, betrayal, and prejudice that held the students’ attention from beginning to end.

Beyond its entertainment value, the production greatly enriched the learners’ understanding of the text. Seeing the play performed allowed students to better grasp the nuances of Shakespeare’s language, character motivations, and key plot developments. Concepts that may seem abstract or challenging in the classroom became clearer when experienced in a live theatrical context. Many students expressed that the performance enhanced their appreciation of the play and helped deepen their insight in preparation for their examinations.

The outing also highlighted the importance of engaging with literature beyond the classroom. Exposure to live theatre fosters a greater appreciation for the arts and encourages critical thinking, interpretation, and discussion - skills that are essential in the study of English literature.

We are grateful for the opportunity and look forward with excitement to taking next year’s group to attend a production of their prescribed Shakespearean play, Hamlet.
