The South African Maths Challenge (SAMC)

On 10 September 2026, Grace Anderson (Grade 5) participated in the Final Round of the South African Mathematics Challenge (SAMC). 
 
The SAMC is a rigorous three-round competition that attracted more than 100 000 students in its opening round. Progressing through each stage requires strong mathematical thinking, perseverance and consistent performance. Grace’s qualification for the final round placed her among a select group of students nationally who advanced through all three stages of the competition. 
 
The final-round event was an enriching experience that extended beyond the examination itself. Students began the day with a meet-and-greet session, followed by collaborative workshops and activities that encouraged problem-solving, discussion and engagement with like-minded peers. 
 
Participants then tackled the final challenge paper, drawing on the mathematical skills and reasoning they had developed throughout the competition. Grace approached the day with enthusiasm, made new friends and represented St Mary’s DSG with determination and pride.

Maths Relay Evening

On 15 September 2026, our Grade 7 students joined their peers from Waterkloof House Preparatory School (WHPS) for an enjoyable evening of mathematical thinking, teamwork and friendly competition at the annual Maths Relay. 
 
Students from both schools were placed into mixed teams and worked together to solve a series of mathematical challenges. Once a problem was completed, teams collected the next task, creating a relay-style format that encouraged collaboration, communication and strategic thinking. 
 
We extend our sincere thanks to WHPS for their warm hospitality and for hosting an event that celebrated both mathematics and the strong partnership between our schools. 

Wits Maths Competition

On 16 September 2026, seven Grade 5 students represented the school in the Final Round of the Wits Mathematics Competition, a challenging event that attracts talented young mathematicians from across Southern Africa. The qualifying students were: Eunha Jeon, Grace Anderson, Ntivo Mushwana, Linako Bewana, Lonene Chauke, Mieke Martens, Renda Madzhie.

Qualifying for the final round is a significant achievement and reflects the students' strong mathematical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to the subject. Reaching this stage of the competition required sustained effort and success in the preceding round.

The students approached the competition with enthusiasm and curiosity, embracing the opportunity to engage with challenging mathematical problems and to test their skills alongside other talented young mathematicians. Their participation reflects not only their dedication, but also a genuine love for mathematics and a willingness to explore complex ideas.
