From the classroom to the real world…
On the 9th of March, the Art and Geography students found themselves on an exciting excursion to Maboneng precinct, Victoria Yards and Jewel City in Johannesburg. For many of us, the idea of rejuvenating an old, dilapidated industrial area into a modern, vibrant community of creatives seemed impossible, but this trip proved how concepts in textbooks can come to life.
For example, in Maboneng it was fascinating to see how old manufacturing buildings or shipping containers were turned into inviting cafés and modern homes for people to enjoy. On the outside, the buildings still paid homage to their old purposes, but on the inside creatives were reshaping what the city is all about.
On practically every building in the city, large murals painted by world renowned artists, such as Karabo Poppy and DBongz, brought sophisticated art to the city streets for every person to enjoy. Each of these murals, with different focuses on social injustice, unity and personal experience, brought about a sense of community and hope for the future of the city.
With an excellent tour guide and some of the best food we have ever had, the trip proved to be not only educational but truly inspirational. Seeing the creative ways in which South Africans are reshaping our country brought about a sense of excitement and anticipation for the endless possibilities of the future.
