Birds of Prey Inning
On Tuesday, 9 June, the Grade 4s enjoyed a fascinating visit from a variety of special birds. We met mischievous macaws, who happily helped themselves to peanuts from their trainer's pocket! We were also introduced to a barn owl and a spotted eagle-owl, which amazed us by demonstrating how silently they can fly. A hadada entertained everyone with its love of chicken and its habit of perching on the trainer's hat, while a Harris hawk impressed us with its skilful flying abilities.
During the presentation, the girls learnt about the important role birds of prey play in our environment. We discovered why it is essential not to put out rat poison: poisoned rodents can be eaten by birds of prey, harming or even killing them. We also learnt what to do if we come across owlets and how we can help protect these remarkable birds.
It was a memorable and educational experience that gave the girls a greater appreciation for South Africa's incredible birdlife.
