From Curiosity to Career: Discover What Drives You — A Reflection on the 2025 Day of Discovery

- Mrs Jomari Miller

On 11 June 2025, St Mary’s DSG proudly hosted its annual Day of Discovery, an afternoon that left a lasting mark on the hearts and minds of our students. During this afternoon, the school was transformed into a vibrant hub of ideas, possibilities, and real-world inspiration as 52 remarkable professionals stepped onto campus to share their career journeys across three impactful sessions.

Guided by the theme “From Curiosity to Career: Discover What Drives You”, the event encouraged students not only to explore potential career paths, but also to tune in to the most powerful driver of personal and professional fulfilment — curiosity.

Each of our presenters brought more than just knowledge of a particular field; they brought their stories, stories of questioning, persistence, failure, reinvention, purpose, and passion. Whether it was professionals sharing the realities of corporate life, creatives offering a glimpse into their artistic worlds, innovators explaining the value of problem-solving, or experts from fields as diverse as law, education, engineering, medicine and public service, every session held one key message: curiosity is the spark that can lead to purpose, passion, and possibility.

Students were encouraged to choose one career they were already considering, and two they were simply curious about. It was in these less familiar sessions that many students discovered something surprising, an interest they hadn’t named, a question they hadn’t asked, or a dream they hadn’t dared consider.

In the words of one student, “I went to a talk I wasn’t planning to attend, just to try something new. Now I can’t stop thinking about it.” This is the magic of curiosity, it opens doors to paths we never even knew existed.

The Day of Discovery also reminded students that success is not one-size-fits-all. It doesn’t have to come with a label or a high salary. It can be found in service, creativity, innovation, or care. What matters most is that it’s aligned with who you are and what sparks your soul.

In closing the day, the students were reminded:

“Your career isn’t just about what you’ll do, it’s about who you are becoming. Let your curiosity guide you. Let your identity shape you. And let your courage protect your path, no matter what others expect.”

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to every presenter, parents, alumnae, and friends of the school, who so generously gave their time, energy, and expertise. You helped bring the world of work into our classrooms and made learning come alive. The conversations you sparked continued long into the evening, a testament to how meaningful and thought-provoking your presence truly was.

Thank you for being part of this inspiring experience. You didn’t just inform minds, you ignited dreams. Your impact will continue to shape the paths and visions of our students long after the day has passed.

Here’s to more curiosity, more courage, and many more discoveries to come.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
