Consumer Studies
The Consumer Studies Department has had a busy and productive term. This year, we introduced Consumer Studies as a subject for Grades 8 and 9, marking an exciting expansion of the program. The first term’s focus was on Entrepreneurship and Sustainability, with students engaging in a hands-on project: recycling old St Mary’s DSG school uniforms into useful everyday items. Through this initiative, students explored product development, target market analysis, and logo design. Their creativity was truly inspiring, resulting in innovative, daring, and beautifully crafted products that were both practical and sustainable.
For Grades 10, 11, and 12, the academic focus for the term covered Consumerism, Sustainable Consumption, the Impact of Consumerism on the World, and Personal Finance & Budgeting. In addition to their theoretical studies, students participated in a variety of practical lessons aimed at refining their skills and techniques. Their hard work was showcased during the Parent Association function, where they took full responsibility for catering the sweets table—a testament to their growing expertise and confidence.
Consumer Studies remains a relevant and dynamic subject, equipping students with essential life skills and fostering a deep understanding of sustainability. Our commitment to holistic development, with sustainability at its core, ensures that our students are well-prepared to navigate an ever-evolving consumer landscape.
