The Junior School Celebrates Book Day on 25 March

- Mrs Juliet Brand

Wednesday, 25 March was a joyful day in the Junior School as we celebrated books and reading as a community. The excitement began early, with students arriving at school dressed as their favourite book characters. Lively conversations filled the corridors as they shared why they chose their characters. The teachers joined in the fun as well, and the Foundation Phase showcased their creative outfits in a festive parade.

A highlight of the day was the Hooked on Books production, where students were treated to enticing “teasers” of popular books to inspire them to read more. Exclusive Books joined us in the afternoon, giving parents the opportunity to purchase books for their daughters.

The day embraced the joy of reading across all languages. In Afrikaans, Sepedi and isiZulu, the Foundation Phase explored storytelling and vocabulary by creating finger puppets. In keeping with our theme, Ideas in Motion, the Intersen Phase rotated between various activity stations. These included book-related tasks such as sequencing events, matching vocabulary, recording dramatised readings, and creating mind maps about stories.

In English, learners participated in literacy-focused activities designed to promote a love of reading. The Foundation Phase explored the elements of a story. In the Intersen Phase some grades put their creativity, design and IT skills to work by creating posters to promote their favourite books whilst others spent time engaging with their class reader. In addition, everyone enjoyed moments to “take time out” and relax with a favourite book.

Each term, students have the chance to show their General Knowledge and earn points for their house. This term, the quiz followed a book-themed format, giving students the opportunity to display their knowledge of books and authors.

It is hoped that this celebration of reading will inspire our students to continue exploring the wonderful world of books and literature.
