Colour Days in Grade 0
A highlight of Grade 0 - and probably the most loved memory of the older girls – are the colour days.
On a Friday in Term 1, the Grade 0s wear a specific colour - we discuss the colour and find items in our environment in that colour, and then the highlight of the day, is Baking!
Baking is a fun-filled way to incorporate the colour aspect of the day, for example: orange fruit salad and yellow banana muffins.
When we follow a recipe it shows the girls that we are reading from left to right. Many different words and ingredients are discussed.
Maths skills are taught while measuring out ingredients: a full cup and half a cup; a tablespoon and a teaspoon; millilitres and grams; counting while stirring.
We discuss the various methods used in the recipe which cover many different science skills (for example dissolving when we made red and pink jelly; the changing states of solids through heating and melting.
Who would have thought that all these skills could be covered while producing something delicious to eat!
