Academics in the Junior School

- Mrs Louise Whitelaw

Our Grade 6s have enthusiastically embraced the Real Life 4 Kids programme, diving into two weeks of hands-on learning that has been both fun and formative. The girls have been earning their own ‘salaries’ by taking on real-world roles and responsibilities in a simulated economy. One of the highlights so far has been earning their very own driver’s licences – a big step toward independence in their mini world. In so doing their daily transport costs are reduced. The girls are gaining invaluable life skills in a vibrant and practical way. It is a joy to witness their confidence grow as they learn the value of hard work, responsibility and teamwork, all whilst they are having a great time.

A few of our Grade 4 to 7 Mathematics enthusiasts embraced the Wits Math Challenge with determination and perseverance. They approached the problems with agility, demonstrating their commitment to expanding their mathematical thinking. This valuable experience enhanced their problem-solving abilities, boosted self-confidence, and deepened their appreciation for the subject. We are excited to explore new opportunities that will further nurture their skills.

“Have you ever coded an AI drone? On the 21st of May I had the honour of participating in the AI Hackathon and for the hackathon my school mates and I coded an amazing AI drone. Our drone was to help solve water shortage - a problem that is becoming more serious each year. We chose our solution as AI-driven precision agriculture, and our idea was to optimise water use and to improve irrigation efficiency. By keeping crops and our plants healthy, we can reduce the amount of water being wasted and help preserve our planet’s precious resources.” Caitlin Chivere

This year, the Junior School formed three teams, each consisting of four Grade 7 students, to take part in the IEB TechWays AI Hackathon. This thrilling challenge provided an opportunity for the girls to collaborate and create innovative AI-powered solutions to real social challenges. The event develops digital and critical thinking skills while encouraging exploration of Artificial Intelligence and its real-world applications. It nurtures creativity and teamwork, enhances 21st-century learning goals and prepares students for the evolving technological landscape. Congratulations to Uthingo Nkosi, Tshepi Moorosi, Anesu Mupona, Gaone Monaisa, Caitlin Chivere, Boledi Ramakgopa, Nolo Hutamo, Lesedi Mashiloane, Unothondo Buthelezi, Uche Amaechina, Kaboentle Phalatsi and Kutloana Masemola for their creative work.
