A Celebration of Creativity: The Fourth Annual Junior School Art Exhibition
St Mary’s DSG recently hosted its fourth annual Junior School Art Exhibition, an evening that radiated creativity, curiosity, and the boundless imagination of its young artists. The event brought together parents, staff, and guests for a vibrant celebration of art and learning, and a reminder of the power of pausing to appreciate the world through a child’s eyes.
This year’s Junior School theme, P.A.G.E – Pause And Go Explore, could not have been more fitting. The exhibition invited all to pause, reflect, and explore the diverse artistic expressions of the students. Through their work, the girls have taken time to think deeply, experiment with new ideas, and find their own creative voices.
At St Mary’s DSG, art is not reserved for a few; it is for everyone. Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that every child possesses creative potential waiting to be unlocked in a safe and non-threatening environment. In the Art class, every voice matters, every idea is valued, and every mistake is embraced as part of the artistic journey. It is a space where imagination thrives and confidence grows.
The art curriculum offers a rich and varied experience, from drawing, painting, and collage to printmaking, sculpture, and digital design. These activities are not merely about developing technical ability, but also about nurturing observation, patience, imagination, and critical thinking. The skills gained through art extend far beyond the classroom, preparing our students for a world that values innovation and self-expression.
Each artwork displayed at the exhibition was the result of a thoughtful and reflective process. The girls began by brainstorming and researching, before planning their ideas, experimenting with techniques, and reflecting on their progress. In doing so, they discovered that art is not solely about the finished piece; it is a process of learning, growth, and discovery.
Technology also plays an integral role in art lessons at St Mary’s DSG. Through digital drawing and photography, the girls are encouraged to explore new creative tools and engage with global artistic ideas, ensuring they are well-prepared for the creative landscape of the future.
The exhibition featured a wide range of themes, including environmental awareness, reflections on the beauty of the school itself, and explorations of personal identity. One particularly moving project encouraged both artists and viewers to pause and truly see the person before them, a poignant reminder of presence, empathy, and connection.
Everyone was encouraged to take time to read the accompanying blurbs, offering insight into the inspiration, technique, and message behind the work. Each display represented a unique voice, a distinct perspective, and a testament to the power of creativity in young minds.
As the evening drew to a close, guests left inspired and uplifted, reminded of the beauty that flourishes when imagination is nurtured and expression is celebrated. The event was officially declared open by both Mrs Sikhosana and Mrs Jadrijevic with warm words of encouragement and a joyful invitation:
“Enjoy the evening, and happy exploring!”
