Unleashing the Power of Life Sciences: A Day of Discovery at FABI

- Mr. Anant Somanchi: Head of Life Sciences

At St. Mary’s DSG, we believe in igniting curiosity, fostering innovation, and providing our students with unparalleled opportunities to engage with the real world of science. This year, our Grade 12 Life Sciences students had the incredible privilege of visiting the Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) at the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield campus, where they immersed themselves in cutting-edge biotechnological research. Hosted by Dr. Markus Wilken and a team of passionate postgraduate researchers, the day was a transformative experience, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.

The day began at the Plant Sciences Complex, where students were warmly welcomed and introduced to the exciting activities ahead. With a deep dive into Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Our students explored the power of amplifying DNA, techniques fundamental to genetic research, forensics, and medical diagnostics. Understanding the theoretical background of these techniques was only the beginning; soon, our students were setting up their own PCR reactions.

Beyond the technical aspects, the day was an opportunity to connect with postgraduate researchers who are actively contributing to scientific discovery. Discussions about CRISPR, a revolutionary gene-editing tool, opened our students' eyes to the immense possibilities within biotechnology. Engaging with scientists who are using CRISPR in their own research gave them firsthand insight into how science is shaping the future of medicine, agriculture, and conservation.

Following the setup of their PCR reactions, students were taken on a guided tour of FABI, witnessing the scope of research being conducted in the fields of plant pathology, genetics, and microbiology. This was followed by a well-earned break, where students had the chance to interact informally with researchers and enjoy the university atmosphere.

The practical experience continued with the loading and running of an agarose gel, a crucial step in visualising DNA. This hands-on session brought textbook concepts to life, allowing students to directly see the outcomes of their PCR experiments. The moment of revelation, seeing their DNA samples under UV light, was an inspiring reminder of the power and precision of biotechnology.

One of the most impactful sessions of the day was the CRISPR talk, where students explored the ethical and scientific implications of gene editing. With CRISPR being one of the most groundbreaking tools in modern science, our students were given a rare opportunity to engage with experts working at the forefront of genetic research. The discussions sparked curiosity and debate, encouraging students to think critically about how they could contribute to the ever-evolving field of life sciences.

The impact of the experience was clear on the excitement and enthusiasm of our students. As one of our Grade 12 learners reflected, “I never imagined I’d be setting up a PCR reaction and running my own gel electrophoresis before university. This experience has truly inspired me to pursue a future in genetics and biotechnology!”

Another student added, “Speaking with postgraduate students made me realise that scientific research isn’t just something we read about in textbooks, it’s happening right now, and we can be a part of it.”

At St. Mary’s DSG, our commitment to fostering a love for science extends beyond the classroom. Experiences like this are crucial in shaping our students' academic journeys and career aspirations. By partnering with the top leading institutions like the University of Pretoria, we ensure that our learners not only receive a top-tier education but are also exposed to the possibilities that lie ahead in the fields of science, technology, and innovation.

This visit to FABI was not just an academic exercise, it was an inspiration. It reaffirmed our belief in hands-on learning, ignited a passion for scientific discovery, and positioned our students on a path toward making meaningful contributions to the world. We look forward to many more such enriching experiences, empowering the next generation of scientists and innovators.
