“Behold, I am doing a new thing,” A celebration of “becoming” for the Class of 2025

The Valedictory service marked a poignant farewell steeped in symbolism and hope. The Grade 12s began with a solemn procession through the labyrinth and the ringing of the school bell, which traditionally marks both the beginning and the end of their journey at St Mary’s DSG. The homily was based on Isaiah 43:19: “Behold, I am doing a new thing.” Revd Alison invited the matrics, parents, and teachers to reflect on what it means to become. She offered three simple truths from the message: rivers don’t wait for permission before carving through the desert; new wine doesn’t apologise for needing a new container; and God does not require certainty before walking with you.

Mrs Howard’s address began with a heartfelt declaration over the class before each student received a St Mary’s DSG Bible and a candle lit from the Sisonke candle. The candles are a sign that their light now goes out into the world, a continuation of the “new thing” God is bringing to life.

As the service concluded on the lawn, the matrics were welcomed by praise singer Lindiwe Swafo. Her gifted performance celebrated creativity, multilingual expression, unity, and love. Through her poetry and song, she affirmed a sense of belonging that reflects the richness of our identity. Honouring tradition in diverse forms is a defining feature of what it means to be an Anglican school rooted in the South African context. Her closing tribute offered a joyful affirmation of the Class of 2025 and of the community that has shaped them.
