An unforgettable first week for our Grade 8 girls at St Mary's DSG

- Mr Fortune Makore

On Sunday, 11 January 2026, our school community gathered for a truly special occasion as we hosted our Grade 8 Family Lunch, marking the official welcome of our newest girls and their families. It was a beautiful day that began with a short but meaningful chapel service, setting the tone for a day rooted in gratitude, connection, and belonging.

The highlight of the day was the joyful lunch, where Grade 8 girls and their families enjoyed delicious food and the warmth of our community. Laughter echoed through the hall and new friendships quickly began to blossom, making it a memorable way to usher the new girls into the St Mary’s sisterhood.

The excitement carried on into Monday, 12 and Tuesday, 13 January, as the Grade 8s dived headfirst into orientation. These two days were a whirlwind of activity and discovery. The girls learned our proud traditions, including spirited war cry practice, and got a glimpse of what a typical academic day at St Mary’s entails. They showcased their talents during swimming evaluations, explored the variety of sporting codes and cultural activities available, and familiarised themselves with the policies that guide our daily school life.

Workshops on discipline, belonging, wellness, and safeguarding reassured our new students that they have unwavering support every step of the way. The girls also visited our school museum, drawing inspiration from St Mary’s rich history and vibrant culture.

As orientation wrapped up, anticipation grew for the grand finale: camp preparations. On Wednesday, 14 January, the adventure truly began as the Grade 8s set off for Zwartkloof Adventure in Bela Bela. Here, the girls bonded over a series of thrilling challenges such as bucket balance, Crazy Crane, the 2D Spider Web, a fashion show, a warrior race, a walk in the predator park, and the much-loved campfire. Each activity was thoughtfully designed to stretch their comfort zones, spark creativity, and encourage teamwork. The girls tackled problem-solving tasks, strengthened new friendships, and experienced the magic of working together as a community.

When camp concluded on Friday, 16 January, our Grade 8s returned with hearts full of joy, minds enriched with new experiences, and a treasure trove of memories to last a lifetime. The friendships, lessons, and laughter of this extraordinary week will surely light their path throughout their high school journey at St Mary’s DSG.

Welcome to the Class of 2030!
